WebOct 3, 2007 · Tridacnids normally release some clear mucus from around their mantles and upper surfaces. The mucus often has some air bubbles within it. The clam is getting rid of excess carbon from photosynthesis. Excessive mucus can clog mechanical filters and is a sign of irritation. The irritation may be from something in the water or form a nearby coral.

When the halide comes on he does okay for the first hour or so but is eventually semi closed with the mantel just barely extended past the shell.

If the whole mantle is retracted, though, then it isn't likely to be PM. If the whole mantle was extended except for a small part being "pinched" then it would be more likely to be PM.
